Installing Linux On Your PS3 – Guidelines To Follow

Installing Linux On Your PS3 – Guidelines To Follow

One of the greatest features of the PS3 is its 8 processing cores. Most regular computers advertise having dual-cores, the PS3 having 4 times as many. You should do your best to take advantage all this new power that the 8 cores provide, successfully turning your PS3 into a fully-functional supercomputer. You’ll be able to fully utilize your PS3 by installing Linux on it, which is now allowed and even supported by Sony.

Before you go to install Linux on your console as soon as possible, take a few tings into consideration as improperly installing the Operating System can damage your console, and possibly even brick it. Here are a few things you should take into consideration before installing Linux on your PS3.

Get a Keyboard and Mouse
Half-way through the Linux installation your PS3 controller wont function on the Linux Operating System. You’ll need to control it like you do a computer; using a mouse and keyboard. Make sure both the mouse and keyboard have USB plugs so you can plug them into your console. You’ll still be able to use your PS3 standard controller in the PS3 factory Operating System, but while running Linux you’ll have to use a Keyboard and a mouse.

Back-up All Data on Your Hard Drive
When you install Linux a new partition will be created on your hard drive. Anything that was previously on that part of the hard drive will be wiped out, and will be left unrecoverable. Make sure you back up any important data that you don’t want to loose.

Make Sure You Have Enough Space to Back-Up All Your Data
As I said above, all your data will be lost when you install Linux on your PS3. Make sure your back-up of choice will have enough space to store all of your data. Some viable options include large PEN drives, Multiple DVDs, or even iPods. Whichever you choose, just make sure it has enough space to hold all your data.

Linux Version
Not all version of Linux are compatible with the PS3. Only some will actually run on it, and even fewer will be able to fully utilize the PS3’s powerful hardware. Currently the only two versions of Linux that fully support the PS3 are Yellow Dog and Ubuntu. You’re free to use any version you’d like, but other versions won’t have full support for the PS3’s 8 processing cores.

If you take the 4 things listed above into consideration you should be all-set and ready to begin your Linux installation on your PS3. Just pop in the installation disc and follow the on-screen directions.
